Sonic: Lost World Will Have No Online Multi-Player

You will be able to play Sonic with your friends - as long as you're in the same room.

Back in May, Nintendo announced their partnership with SEGA to produce new Sonic the Hedgehog titles for the 3DS and Wii U. They followed that up with the Sonic Lost World trailer to whet the appetites of Sonic fans.

With the Wii U’s capabilities, players also wondered what kind of multi-player options this new Sonic title would feature. After all, the fast-paced classic co-op mode is something we’ve come to expect.

Yesterday, producer Takashi Iizuka announced that the game will have both co-op and versus multi-player options… just not all the options on the Wii U.

“In cooperative play, Sonic will be using the Wii U GamePad and someone can be supporting Sonic in co-op with the Wii Remote. In versus mode, one player will be playing on the TV screen and the other player will be racing using the GamePad so you don’t have to have split screen. You both have your own screen and can race each other.”

But, there’s a little hitch.

“The Wii U multiplayer is not on the internet. It’s basically everyone sitting on the same couch.”

Granted, not having to look at a split screen is a nice innovation and takes advantage of the Wii U GamePad, but are SEGA and Nintendo doing Sonic a disservice by keeping it contained to the same couch?

The 3DS, however, can have up to 4-player versus over local Wi-Fi and the internet. And this is a first for the 3DS.

It was not indicated as to why SEGA made this decision.
