Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood’s Early Access Hit by DDoS Attack

Final Fantasy XIV's Stormblood early access was rough. On the day of launch, Square Enix addresses the problems.

Final Fantasy XIV‘s newest expansion, “Stormblood”, released yesterday, but before that, players who pre-ordered the FFXIV expansion got early access on June 16 — and it was a mess. Players were waiting for hours just to get access to the game, and to put salt in the wound, a main story quest couldn’t be completed because of server loads.

Final Fantasy XIV‘s last expansion, “Heavensward”, was smooth throughout its launch window, leaving no reason for players to be worried about the “Stormblood” launch.

On June 20 — the expansion’s full release date — the Final Fantasy XIV website released news that they had been targeted by DDoS attacks throughout Early Access — and into the “Stormblood” official release. The development team had this to say about the attack.

We have confirmed that since Jun. 16th [sic], we have been experiencing DDoS attacks from an anonymous third-party targeting the Final Fantasy XIV game servers on the NA data center.

Our technical staff is taking every possible measure to address this issue but the attack is still continuing to take place by changing their methods at every moment. We will continue to monitor and work on recovery from every possible angle.

Due to this attack, our game servers, network equipment and network connection are being hit with heavy load at an extensive level, which is causing a disconnection from the game and login difficulties.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing.

These attacks have caused massive outages for the game’s servers, impacting network equipment and connections. Because of this, gamers have been experiencing long load times, which has caused login difficulties.
