Today at Gamescom, Square Enix announced Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition, a reimagining of their latest main entry in the Final Fantasy series. The title is set to be released later this year.
Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition won’t be a direct port of the main Final Fantasy XV title — and one of the biggest giveaways is its art style. The game uses a chibi art style that some of the series’ other spin-offs, like the Theatrhythm Final Fantasy games, have used in the past. Instead, the Pocket Edition is a “retelling” of the Final Fantasy XV story, although what that entails is not currently clear.
The combat also appears reminiscent of the main title’s Active Cross Battle system, with touch controls that have been “optimized for mobile devices”, according to the developer in a press release.
And while Square Enix has produced direct mobile ports for many of their older, main Final Fantasy main titles, as well as spin-offs designed specifically for mobile devices, the Pocket Edition is the first to be of both worlds.
For those of you interested in giving Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition a shot, all 10 of its episodes will be available to download (with the first episode being free) later this fall on iOS, Android, and Windows 10 devices.
