In the original F.E.A.R. you played as the head of F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault Recon), a fictional United States Special Forces team, sent in to contain the situation revolved around a supernatural girl named Alma Wade. The game was followed up with two direct sequels as well as two expansion packs.

Continuing the franchise, F.E.A.R. Online was announced earlier this morning as a free-to-play multiplayer shooter. The title will be published by Aeria Games and will continue the story of Alma. Tom Nichols, Vice President of PC games at Aeria Games, stated,

“FEAR Online will bring back the tense, heart-pounding action that the series is known for and make it accessible to a huge online community of competitive players.”

This means that F.E.A.R. Online will try and remain true to the original atmosphere of the franchise. It was also announced that the game will follow a storyline parallel to the events of F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin.

F.E.A.R. Online will focus on several team combat modes. Players can choose from over ten maps, each packed with details such as “still-twitching bodies hanging from meat hooks and messages smeared in blood.” The fight will be between Armacham technology Corporation (ATC) and the F.E.A.R.team. Up to four players can team up to fight against either the Armacham personnel or “hideous monsters lurking around every corner.”

Players can start signing up for F.E.A.R. Online’s beta via the Aeria Games website.
