No Man’s Sky VR Announced, Part of Beyond Expansion

The entirety of No Man's Sky is getting a VR experience built from the ground up as part of this summer's Beyond expansion.

Hello Games’s No Man’s Sky is getting a VR overhaul this summer as part of the Beyond expansion. The announcement came today during Sony’s State of Play livestream and featured a brief trailer showcasing what VR might look like once the expansion makes its way to the game sometime this summer.

Hello Games described the new experience in some detail:

Grab the joystick and thruster to fly your starship over an unexplored alien planet as you peer out of the cockpit at the view below. Reach into your backpack to grab your multitool, touch it to switch to terrain manipulation, and carve out intricate shapes with unprecedented control. Play in multiplayer and casually wave to your non-VR friends or fist bump your PSVR peers.

Sean Murray, founder of Hello Games, took to Twitter shortly after the unveiling and provided a few more details. Murray said the VR mode is not restricted to No Man’s Sky Next or the new Beyond content. Instead, anything and everything in No Man’s Sky can be experienced in VR once the mode launches.

However, it isn’t simply a VR add on. Instead, Murray said the team worked to create a VR experience from the ground up to create a fully immersive experience because “It’s completely unique to land on a world that no-one has ever seen before and to really feel as if you’re there.”

VR mode is part of the larger expansion set to release this year dubbed Beyond. Not much is known about Beyond at this point, save that it will feature a deep multiplayer experience and fulfill some of the promises Murray and his team made from before the base game first launched.

Despite appearing during Sony’s new broadcast series, No Man’s Sky VR is going to launch simultaneously for PS4 and PC this summer.
