The game takes place directly after the events of Zombie Army Trilogy. Tim Jones, head of creative at Rebellion, and Ryan Baker, lead designer at Rebellion, showed off the game’s first level, Milan. The nine-minute trailer is full of zombies, full of brains, and full of brand-new mechanics.

As Zombie Army 4 starts out, players are on what Jones and Baker call “clean-up duty” from the chaos of the last three games. Series’ staple Karl Fairburn makes an early appearance, showing off his wounds from his last encounter with the undead.

Of course, things don’t stay calm and the dead come back with a vengeance and a purpose.

The Biggest Changes Coming to Zombie Army 4

The gameplay trailer shows off a lot of new mechanics for Dead War. From paranormal weapon enhancements to unique special attacks and environmental traps, Jones and Baker quickly get to the good stuff.

While our writer on the showroom floor met with Rebellion in person and has more info on his hands-on preview here, we do know that safe rooms and weapon upgrade kits will play a large part in Zombie Army 4.

Players can upgrade any of the weapons they’re carrying, adding attachments like electrified barrels, and upgrading Tiers that can unlock new attacks. Some provide singular attacks while others provide AoE-type attacks.

Jones and Baker said the biggest upgrades coming to Dead War are progression and upgrade paths for weapons, perks, and characters.

Zombie Army 4: Dead War is slated for an “early 2020” release for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It will feature 4-player co-op.

As has seemingly become a recurring theme with many recently-announced PC games, the end of the trailer features the Epic Games logo. Dead War has not yet been named an exclusive to that store on PC. However, it could follow in the footsteps of Shenmue 3, which is currently facing backlash for ditching Steam at launch.
