Diablo 4 to Require an Always Online Internet Connection

Diablo 4 will require an internet connection at all times, even on console.

Diablo 4 will allow you to play solo, but it will still require an always-online internet connection, according to Lead Designer Angela Del Priore.

Speaking at a panel during Blizzcon 2019, Priore stated they “are not going to support an offline mode,” adding, “But as I said before, nothing in Diablo 4 is going to require partying up. You can play solo and dungeons are private.”

Whether players like it or not, this is not the first Diablo game to require an internet connection throughout its playtime. Diablo 3 started this trend in the series with its PC iteration, though the console ports do not require that players be online.

Diablo 4 will require that even console players always be online, meaning PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players won’t be free of this requirement this time around.

The community at large has mixed feelings about always-online games, and for good reason. Those with shoddy internet connections are inevitably left in the dust with titles that require the player be online at all times, though that is clearly a risk Blizzard and other publishers are willing to take.

Despite the gaming community having qualms with always-online games singleplayer games, it hasn’t stopped them from buying them up in the past.

Diablo 4 doesn’t have a release date just yet, but we’ll be sure to tell you when Blizzard reveals those details at a later date.
