Gran Turismo 7 Won’t Hit the Track Just Yet, Gets Delayed

Gran Turismo 7 is delayed, though a statement about GT7's development should be coming soon.

Gran Turismo 7, originally thought to be releasing in 2021, is delayed to an unspecified time, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan said. The announcement came as part of an exclusive interview Ryan gave with GQ Magazine.

The Sony boss didn’t have much else to say about the delay or the rationale behind it, but a Sony public relations representative did say COVID and remote work challenges are behind it. They promised a statement about the game soon and said:

GT7 has been impacted by Covid-related production challenges and therefore will shift from 2021 to 2022. With the ongoing pandemic, it’s a dynamic and changing situation and some critical aspects of game production have been slowed over the past several months.

It’s a situation Ryan said is unavoidable in the current climate, though he’s happy to wait and ensure the best version of the game releases.

I think in this world, where creative people are working remotely, you’ve just got to respect the fact that that development needs to take what it needs to take and to get the games right.

There are two approaches to this: you can either hold the date and put out the game irrespective of quality or you can ship it when it’s right. We have always taken the latter approach.

The Gran Turismo series is certainly no stranger to delays. Gran Turismo 5 suffered continuous delays spanning several years between its announcement in 2005 and release in 2010. Here’s hoping Gran Turismo 7 won’t be subject to the same fate.
