Tragedy always has a way of bringing people together. It brings people closer while they try to comfort one another, while they try to find meaning in the horror, and while they try to figure out how to move on.
Of course, some people have less enlightened ways of doing those things than others.
Burn the witch games!
After the Sandy Hook shooting, violent video games came under attack from various groups all claiming that they are desensitizing kids and actively contributing to the steady decline in blah blah etc. We’ve all heard the blame game before, but what makes this time unusual is the bonfire.
SouthingtonSOS helps organize assistance in times of crisis. The group will be hosting a bonfire to burn violent video games, and they are inviting children to bring their own violent games to burn in exchange for gift certificates to local restaurants.
The demonstration is not meant to blame violent games specifically for the Sandy Hook school shooting, but is instead merely meant to be a statement against violent games in general.
SouthingtonSOS is saying is that there is ample evidence that violent video games, along with violent media of all kinds, including TV and Movies portraying story after story showing a continuous stream of violence and killing, has contributed to increasing aggressiveness, fear, anxiety and is desensitizing our children to acts of violence including bullying.
Apparently they haven’t picked up on the irony of using mass arson to protest violence.
While they blissfully ignore the inherent hypocrisies in the demonstration, the rest of us are left to wonder when people are going to stop trying to pass around the blame and start actually taking some semblance of responsibility for their children. If you think violent video games, movies, and television will make your child dangerous, then don’t let your child be exposed to such things until you think they can handle it.
Just stop looking to the dark ages for your answers, people.
