Cyberpunk 2077 Teaser Trailer Released, Meatsacks Rejoice

Teaser trailer of in-development Cyberpunk 2077 released by Polish developers CD Projekt RED.

Cyberpunk, a prediction of a near future so close they have to keep changing the date. The genre invented by William Gibson that inspired the pen-and-paper RPG is set to become a video game developed by Polish development studio CD Projekt RED, whose previous work includes The Witcher.

As the teaser video above shows, Cyberpunk 2077 is set in a near future dystopian society where body augmentation is the height of fashion and its followers happily sacrifice their humanity to sport the latest look.

When Cool Kills

The subject matter is a darkly satirical prediction of the moral and technological direction of our own societies. It is brutal, sassy and could happen in your lifetime. Well, the game almost certainly, but maybe even the prediction. Although the projected date of the age of flying cars and quick-fitting cybernetic augmentations keeps being shifted like a Duke Nukem release date.

The first edition of the pen-and-paper near futurism, published by R. Talsorian Games in 1988, was set in the then distant 2013, so it is deliciously fitting that 2013 is the very year when we are now invited to enjoy a virtual Cyberpunk world set in 2077 (even if it’ll be another couple of years before we actually can).

In a very meta move, CD Projekt RED also embedded a message in the above video, providing more details. In it, they describe the kind of game they plan Cyberpunk 2077 to be: a “story-heavy, nonlinear, open world RPG”.

They also reference an announcement planned for the 5th February, regarding a”fully open world game with an intense story” which is “much closer to completion”. No title was mentioned, but there is popular speculation regarding a Witcher sequel.

The final message gives a release date of “when it’s ready” and a link to the Cyberpunk website for further information as it is released.
