Witchfire Weapons Trailer Reveals How They Use Powerful Magic

Witchfire's guns work with special magical properties, meaning skilled players will be able to unleash powerful magic on their foes.

The eternally delayed dark fantasy shooter Witchfire from developer The Astronauts (The Vanishing of Ethan Carter) has received a very brief new trailer detailing some of the properties of its guns. Similar to the strange abilities available in Painkiller and Bulletstorm, the guns in Witchfire have magical properties that put an emphasis on precision and execution.

In the two-minute trailer above, the hand cannon called “Hunger” is shown to get stronger when you score critical hits. As you can expect, a critical hit is typically a headshot, though non-humanoid enemies may have different weak points. When you connect a certain number of critical hits and then reload, your next few shots will be powered up. Combined with certain groups of enemies, this means you can focus on cannon fodder before going for bigger baddies to down them in one or two shots.

It’s an interesting way to prioritize enemy types when getting into battle. It’s not unlike classic FPS games, just with maybe more utility for something like a pistol. While “Hunger” is the only gun shown in this trailer, it appears that all of Witchfire’s weapons will have special properties that players will discover as they get their hands on them.

Witchfire was initially revealed back in 2017 with a tentative date of “soon.” It’s been almost six years, and we still don’t know when the game will actually release. Considering the pedigree of the studio, which was founded by former members from developer People Can Fly, it does seem like the wait will be worth it.

Currently, Witchfire has been announced for PC. When it does release, it will be available on the Epic Games Store.
