The Star Wars: Outlaws gameplay trailer has given us a new first look at the game first announced at the Microsoft Summer Game Fest 2023 Showcase. There’s stealth, shooting, space combat, and a healthy dose of character and story details. To conclude the 2023 Ubisoft Forward event, Massive Studios showed off over 10 minutes of Star Wars: Outlaws footage, which has a 2024 release date for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC.
Outlaws is the first Star Wars game from Ubisoft, and for its debut, the company is going big. Outlaws is a narrative-driven open-world action game with space combat to boot. You play as Kay, a young smuggler who, in classic Star Wars form, has gotten herself in deep. Oh, and she has an adorable creature buddy/pet named Nyx. Eventually, they will team up with their droid friend, ND-5.
This is a Star Wars story that will take place at the intersection of the Syndicate and Empire rule across the galaxy between the events of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
The extensive trailer shows off all sorts of gameplay, from action and stealth to dialogue choices. With Nyx, Kay has a lot of creative options through various combat situations. At its core, Outlaws appears to be a cover-based third-person shooter. But we also saw a good deal of traversal options and skills that prove Kay is quick and nimble.
Even after the accomplishments of Jedi Survivor, Star Wars: Outlaws feels like an ambitious take on exploring the vastness of the galaxy. There’s the potential in Outlaws for more dialogue choices and RPG options in comparison to Respawn’s games. And, of course, you can go to space.
While I still found the ship in Jedi Survivor perfunctory, Outlaws boasts space battles and a sense that customizing your ship could actually matter since you’ll be seeing it a lot more. On the whole, Ubisoft’s take on Star Wars seems super promising. Stay tuned for more.
