Super Mario RPG Returns with a Wonderful-looking Remake this November

In a surprise announcement, Nintendo revealed Super Mario RPG is getting a remake and that it's coming this year.

As part of today’s seriously packed Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo announced some new projects for its mascot plumber. One of those was a full 3D remake of Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars. Released back in 1996 on the SNES as a collaboration between Nintendo and then-Squaresoft (now Square Enix), the game has developed a passionate fan following that has been dying to see some kind of continuation or remake for years. Those prayers have finally been answered.

Set for release on November 17, 2023, Super Mario RPG looks ultra faithful to the original despite its graphical change. While the new art style doesn’t exactly mimic the pre-rendered look of the SNES version, it has the same proportions and isometric view with practically the same level design. One noticeable addition is that of full motion cutscenes, which were obviously not possible when the game originally released on the SNES. That will likely help give some extra oomph to the story, which is a fun and memorable journey in its own right.

If you’d like to pre-order the game digitally, a store listing on the Nintendo eShop is currently live with a set price of $59.99. There are also a plethora of extra screenshots to give you a clear idea of how this game will look. Despite the Switch hardware being over six years old, it still has the ability to create some truly astonishing-looking visuals.
