Valve Denies Exclusive Titles

Valve to leave their headliners to be open platform.

Exclusive titles are not uncommon to the gaming industry. With Valve preparing to launch its SteamOS machines next year through various third parties, it stands to wonder if Steam too will be like Microsoft and Sony and make its eagerly awaited titles exclusive to the Steam Machines.

In an interview with Doug Lombardi, one of Valve’s public relation representatives, The Verge found that while Steam saw an outpouring of support in the form of adoption with Half-Life 2 being exclusive to Steam, the company isn’t sure whether such a decision was good or bad in the long run.

Valve has several well-known titles. They include:

  • Half-Life
  • Portal
  • Team Fortress
  • Left 4 Dead
  • Dota 2.

“It’s against our philosophy to put a game in jail and say it only works on Steam Machines.” – Doug Lombardi, Valve Public Relations

Steam Machines are being built on an open platform concept using Linux. As of now, it is too early to tell if Valve’s decision to not limited its games to the Steam Machine will affect adoption of the new console.
