Hero World, the Guitar Hero/DJ Hero MMO that never was
Dubbed Hero World, the idea was to have players manage their own clubs and to try to drive as many NPC's to their establishment as possible by hiring players of the various Guitar Hero and DJ Hero titles to play there. Hero World was to have an accompanying Facebook game with a in-game currency that would be shared across all titles in the franchise, that would allow players to upgrade their club or purchase new items in-game, depending on the title.
It's an interesting concept and would have mixed up what was becoming a very stale genre. It was this lack of innovation and over-saturation of the market that saw the popularity of rythym games plummet sharply, causing Activision to pull the plug on all titles currently in development for the franchise, Hero World included.
After a five year hiatus, the series made a comeback in October of last year with Guitar Hero Live, which received favourable reviews. Hero World is unlikely to see a similar resurrection, however, as the cancellation of the project first time round led the now defunct developer Virtual Fairground to bankruptcy.
Sad the game never saw the light of day? Or do you think another Guitar Hero game is the last thing the world needed, even if it was trying to do something different? Let us know in the comments below.
