Doom Eternal Smartly Ditching Microtransactions, In-Game Store

Doom Eternal Creative Director Hugo Martin posted on social media to confirm there is no in-game store.

Today brings some good news about the upcoming demon-stomping Doom Eternal. According to a post from the game’s Creative Director Hugo Martin, Doom Eternal will feature no in-game microtransaction or store.

Instead, cosmetic items will be available to unlock with in-game XP, though the progression system won’t be tied to Doom Guy’s abilities or how you play.

Replying to a question on the game’s fan-focused Facebook Group, Martin had this to say about the possibility of microtransactions or an in-game store feature:

Eternal is a $60 game, not a free to play game or a mobile game we are giving you a complete experience.

Microtransactions have been the subject of much debate in recent years, with Middle Earth: Shadow Of War completely removing them back in 2018.

Upcoming ARPG Torchlight Frontiers also recently dropped its F2P, microtransaction-focused style and is now set to release as Torchlight 3.

Microtransactions have even been investigated by the Federal Trade Commission, and been targeted by legislators in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Doom Eternal is set to land on the PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Stadia on March 20. A Nintendo Switch port of the first-person shooter is also slated for release later this year. Are you planning on picking up the sequel to Doom 2016, and are you glad the microtransactions are getting booted?
