5 Reasons That a Mac Could Be Your Next Gaming Computer

Don't think Macs are for gaming? Think again.
This article is over 9 years old and may contain outdated information

"Mac's aren't for gaming!"

How many times have you heard that? Well, now it's time to dispel that belief.

With over 1500 games for Mac available on Steam alone; Mac is only becoming more and more viable. OSX has support for popular titles such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Darkest Dungeon, Hearthstone, and League of Legends, and DotA 2; and with the amount of Mac gamers nearly equaling Linux gamers, you would think the numbers speak for themselves.

Admittedly, a majority of the games currently available for Mac are newer releases. So, while a longer backlog might not be there, more and more games seem to be receiving a Mac port. Thanks, in part, to Steam and Origin having great clients on the OSX operating system.

But, since some people seem to think that the amount of games available natively does not matter, here are five reasons why a Mac could be your next gaming computer.

1. Support

Ever have anything go wrong with your Mac? Take it to the Genius Bar, or send it on into Apple. Either way, you’ll get taken care of.

The same can’t be said for a gaming rig that you put together yourself with parts from places like Newegg and Tiger Direct. Even gaming PC creators still can’t compare to the level of support that Apple can provide.

Gaming PC companies such as Origin are known for having great support, but the lack of in-person availability causes them to fall short when compared to a tech giant like Apple.

2. Compatibility

Sure, not all games have the ability to run natively on a Mac, but a Mac has the ability to run Windows natively, and when you are running Windows on a Mac, you’ll never have to worry about whether or not your hardware will be compatible with the other components that it is sitting next to. Whether you are gaming on a MacBook Pro or an iMac, you’ll be able to rest easy knowing everything will just work together seamlessly.

The graphics drivers for your Mac’s hardware are even better when running Windows than when running OS X.

3. Stability

This goes hand in hand with the last point. If everything works together, you’ll never have to worry about your system becoming unstable. Unless you have a virus, you will not have to worry about a blue screen of death or anything of the sort.

Of course, you will be giving up the ability to overclock, but you will be gaining some peace of mind.

4. Design

This might be a matter of opinion, but Apple’s hardware has always been widely regarding in the design industry. So, if you want to game on the sexiest hardware, look no further than Apple’s line of computers.

The sleek metals and contrasting blacks on the company’s devices make them the envy of the industry, spawning a great deal of copy-cat devices from chicklet-style keyboards to silver, unibody laptops.

5. Resolution

Sometimes it’s all about the pixels, and with Macs, it always is. Apple’s computers are on the forefront of computer display technology with their Retina displays.

Even if you’re rocking a Mac Mini or Mac Pro and aren’t using an Apple-made monitor, you will still be able to enjoy stunning graphics in beyond 1080p resolutions easily, and usually without any hiccups. Because, as mentioned earlier, compatibility and stability will not be a problem.

With these five reasons, plus the amount of games that have been coming to Mac thanks to services like Steam, we could see more and more gamers using them in the future.
