New Rise of the Tomb Raider trailer released… through Entertainment Weekly?

Well that's a new one.

Rise of the Tomb Raider revealed a new trailer this morning called “Descent into Legend.” What stands out the most isn’t necessarily the trailer itself, which emphasizes the variety of the tombs that the player will explore, but where the news officially broke from: Entertainment Weekly.

Of all places, you would think an outlet like IGN, Gamespot, or Game Informer would be the ones to break big gaming news, and they usually are. But Entertainment Weekly?

In a way, you could say that it’s a reaffirmation of the growth of gaming’s importance as a legitimate entertainment medium. To think that a massive and long-running outlet like Entertainment Weekly, that has built its reputation and business around reporting celebrity, movie, and television news, would think that being the first to break a piece of video game news is worth their time, is odd but kind of exciting.

This isn’t the first Xbox One exclusive that Microsoft has used an alternative media outlet to break a big piece of gaming news. Back in August, they used BuzzFeed to reveal the opening cinematic for Halo 5: Guardians.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is coming exclusively (albeit timed) to Xbox One on November 10, 2015, but will see a PC and PS4 release in 2016.
