Wasteland 2: Director’s Cut gets release date, details on upgrades to console experience

Classic Fallout-inspired game is coming to PS4 on Oct 13th.

In a new post on the PlayStation Blog, inExile CEO, Brian Fargo revealed some major news about the upcoming console port for Wasteland 2, titled Wasteland 2: Director’s Cut.

Probably the most important thing that the fans want to know is that the game will be launching on October 13, 2015.

But that’s not all there is to the blog post. Fargo goes on to discuss some of the design decision making that went into adapting such a PC-centric experience to console-based control schemes.

This can be a tough thing to do, especially when movement in these kinds of games is predicated on point-and-click mechanics, which can make movement a real chore on consoles if you port directly. Fargo says the team looked to games like X-COM: Enemy Unknown for inspiration on how to solve that problem. The game will rely on a radial menu system that will have selectable actions that the character can perform.

Another detail that console players will love is that the game is receiving a slight visual upgrade, as the port will run on the new Unity 5 engine. As a result, character models, environments and lighting will all receive a slight boost in fidelity.

With Wasteland 2: Director’s Cut, we see yet another example of the finite state that platform exclusivity currently sits in. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as every re-release gives a new audience a way to play great games that they couldn’t before. Cue the online flame wars over whose version is the best.
