Square Enix Announces Final Fantasy XVI with Naoki Yoshida in the Lead

Final Fantasy XVI is happening, and Square Enix's acclaimed Naoki Yoshida is at the helm.

Square Enix announced Final Fantasy XVI in a big way as part of the September PlayStation 5 event. Not only is Final Fantasy XIV‘s Naoki Yoshida producing the game, but it’s the biggest effort from an expanded FFXIV development team.

And that’s about all Square Enix officially announced outside of a lengthy story trailer. More information is set to come in 2021, but meanwhile, there’s a lot to unpack in the FFXVI trailer.

FFXVI goes back to a medieval setting and revolves around warring regions. Crystals hold back something called the Blight, but there’s a race of people, including the as-yet-unnamed protagonist, fighting against classic Final Fantasy summon spirits such as Shiva.

Things seem to revolve around a young child called Joshua. The protagonist acts as his guardian, until a traumatic event pushes Joshua into what the trailer calls his “awakening,” and he turns into something akin to the Ifrit summon spirit.

FFXVI is an action-based game, much like Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy 7 Remake — only much darker. In place of bro-mance camaraderie and the many timelines of Sephiroth, Final Fantasy XVI has Malboro ambushes in burned-out villages, chocobos suited up for war, and death lurking around every corner.

Despite being shown off during the PlayStation 5 showcase, Final Fantasy XVI will release on PC as well. Stay tuned to GameSkinny for more Final Fantasy XVI news as it develops.
