Icelandic Hollywood Director to Helm EVE Universe TV Show

The EVE Universe is set to find its way into comics and a television show.

The extended EVE Universe is set to get a whole lot bigger, with the Creative Director Torfi Frans Olafsson‘s announcement of some grand plans for the future, including a comic book adaption of EVE players’ True Stories in collaboration with Dark Horse comics and a television series helmed by a Hollywood director..

Details were light on the nature of the TV series, but I managed to catch Olafsson after the announcement to confirm that it would be a live action series rather than animated, as seen in many of EVE Online‘s slick promotional videos. There is no release date or locked-in storyline, but Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur has signed on to direct the project.

Kormákur has a strong film-making pedigree, with a number of Hollywood feature films such as the 2012 Contraband with Mark Wahlberg, as well as home-grown Icelandic movie projects such as Djúpið (trans: The Deep).

Given the EVE Universe’s osmotic connection between reality and virtuality and how ingrained player organisations are woven into the fabric of EVE’s lore, it will be very interesting to see how this project will be handled.

In a video message to EVE’s capsuleers, Kormákur expressed his excitement at the opportunity to use New Eden as a muse and described it as an “infinite story machine”.

Broken paramedic and coffee-drinking Englishman whose favourite dumb animal is an oxymoron. After over a decade of humping and dumping the fat and the dead, my lower spine did things normally reserved for Rubik's cubes, bringing my career as a medical clinician to an unexpectedly early end. Fortunately, my real passion is in writing and given that I'm now highly qualified in the art of sitting down, I have the time to pursue it. Having blogged about video games (well, mostly EVE Online) for years, I hope to channel my enjoyment of wordcraft and my hobby of gaming into one handy new career that doesn't involve other people's vomit.
