Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 Review: A Worthy Sequel
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 continues the series with some greatly appreciated improvements. This game adds even more content than the original, balances and changes to make things more fair, and plenty of events to give the game more variety.
What I liked
As someone who has played the 1st game, I am greatly impressed with the 2nd game so far. A couple of the biggest things i had issues with in the last game were fixed: Death Ball and Super Saiyan.
I played a Saiyan in the last game and all I had to do was go Super Saiyan and I could spam ultimate attacks all day.
Super Saiyan has been completely reworked so that you can't spam it anymore, and you can choose when to stay in and go out.
Death Ball also is blocked more easily, and harder to hit with, which means it isn't the go-to attack.
As someone who played Saiyan and other other races, this was a great change for everyone. Now Super Saiyan is what it should be -- a boost to your stats while still maintaining the basic game play. It also lets you have more variety instead of using the same attack over and over.
You can also get Super Saiyan through a quest line and not randomly dropped from a Parallel Quest like in last game.
Events and the City
There are now events that periodically pop-up which makes the world feel more alive. Vehicles and flight were also added to give more freedom, which is always a plus.
There are different areas in the city that offer events, and every race gets some type of bonus. For example, Saiyans get more quests from Vegeta, and Majins can increase Majin Buu's family higher than normal.
This just adds even more reason to play other characters and it is fun to see what all the differences are.
Overall, the world just feels more alive and more like you are actually existing in the Dragon Ball universe.
Missions and Expert Missions
There are plenty of missions to do with other players and a new one called Expert Mission. This lets 6 people team up for harder missions. There are special events that happen in these missions and you will see attacks that you don't normally see.
What I Don't Like
RNG (Random Number Generation)
My biggest issue from the last game is still there -- RNG from the Parallel Quests. You have to complete bonus objectives to get extra fights, then hope you get the item you want.
However, it does seem like you don't have the events randomly happen anymore. Whenever I completed the bonus objectives, the extra events always happened. It is possible that I just got very lucky.
Waiting for Dialogue
Another thing that was slightly annoying was the dialogue in certain story missions. Sometimes you have to wait for dialogue and events to play out during a match, however, the enemy will continue to attack.
During this time, you cannot defeat the enemy or damage them, but they can still attack and damage you. I have not lost yet because of this, but it gets really annoying and drags the matches out longer than needed.
Overall, this game is a great improvement over the original. There is a ton more content and things that did not go well in the last game were addressed.
This is a prime example of improving a franchise from one game to the next. If they keep this up, this will become one of the best -- if not the best -- anime games ever.
Any fan of the original, of Dragon Ball, or of fighting games in general should give this a try.
