I saw them enter the house, and I've slowly been making my way toward it. I'm sticking to cover and watching the windows, making sure I haven't been spotted. I'm close enough that I can hear them inside, and I move toward the door to grab a kill and snag some loot.

Suddenly, the door flies open. We begin a bizarre dance of missed attacks and jumping. The framerate hits the floor. Somehow, my enemy does, too. As I'm looting what's left behind, I get shot in the back of the head.

Welcome to Vigor.

A looter shooter from Bohemia Interactive, Vigor comes from the same crew that brought us DayZ. The game has been in the Xbox Game Preview Program (Early Access) for about a year, but it recently came out as a full-fledged title.

It's got a lot of fun ideas, but a lack of context and polish really hold Vigor back from being the money-making F2P game it desperately wants to be.

Shelter from the Storm

After a brief tutorial shows you the basics, you arrive at your shelter. It's a "safe space" that acts like a hub where you can prepare for your next excursion, construct equipment, train, and generally look around and admire things between skirmishes.

There's a gun range, there's a Rubik's cube, and there's a litany of crafting benches. The area can seem overwhelming at first, especially as you try to find everything and get your bearings. However, a few button shortcuts let you quickly skip around the menus to find what you need.

After you've checked things out, grabbed a few weapons, and maybe set a shelter improvement, you head to the map and set out on a mission.

One thing you'll notice right away, whether in the hub or in a mission, is how pretty everything looks. Bohemia Interactive makes some good looking environments to run around in, and Vigor is no exception. Granted, that makes the scenes of you and an enemy flailing around with knives look even more bizarre when you do jump into the thick of things.

Hidden Foes

When you hit a map, you're able to choose between a variety of locations. Maps themselves do not change, but the layout of loot and the location of the objective does. Each round, your goals are:

  • Survive
  • Find loot
  • Grab the airdrop (optional)
  • Make it to safety

You drop into one of about eight small maps with about a dozen other killers. You're given roughly 15 minutes to loot and gear up before the airdrop hits. After that, you grab the airdrop crate and try to reach one of the map's exits, all while a radiation cloud funnels the remaining survivors toward the same map exit.

If you reach an exit alive, any gear you have with you (including the airdrop, if you were the one who managed to grab it) will help stock your shelter. You can squirrel away supplies, building materials, guns, and health kits for the next mission with the loot you bring back.

Die before reaching an exit, however, and it's all lost.

This risk/reward system cultivates an interesting decision-making process centered on luck. The more loot you find and stow away, the more painful getting merced becomes. Maybe you won't even go for that airdrop; maybe you let other players fight over it while you escape with those 37 bags of fertilizer.

However, what if you risk it all by rushing the airdrop, downing a few enemies, and grabbing a handful of better loot? If you manage to bag a few kills and still make it out alive, it's an exhilarating rush of excitement.

Unfortunately, the cutthroat nature of Vigor also exacerbates some of its biggest flaws, some of which can't be overlooked.

Troublesome Tactics

It is literally astounding that Vigor is no longer considered an "Early Access" title. The game is so wonky and fickle that I found myself questioning whether it was being intentionally obtuse or if it is simply plagued by myriad technical issues.

At one point, I opened a window, vaulted inside, and crept around a corner. When I tried to leave through the same window, it took more than 10 button presses to vault back out, something that should not be so difficult in a game where an errant noise or movement can give away your position and get you immediately killed.

Aiming with low-level guns is absurd, too. The aiming reticle for each is so massive that any shot beyond point-blank range will probably miss unless you have a steady supply of rare weaponry. That's not to mention that as you close in on your prey, you better hope that Vigor's framerate can hold up.

I even started one round with an incomplete map. No points of interest. No marked exits. No airdrop circle. I wandered aimlessly, wondering if I had entered some weird in-game purgatory until I was shot dead in the snow by an unseen enemy.

Not only did I lose the match, but I also lost all of the weapons I had gathered. To add insult to injury, the game told me, "You should have bought insurance," something you buy before the start of the round that will let you keep your loadout, even if you die. The problem is that you buy insurance with one of the Vigor's many currencies: crowns. And crowns cost real money.

Let that sink in: I died and couldn't keep my loadout because the game glitched before chiding me for not using real-world money to protect my in-game investment.

Good Intentions

Pros:
  • Environments are pretty
  • Intense gameplay
  • Easy to sit down for one round or many
Cons:
  • Feels totally unfinished
  • Convoluted microtransactions
  • Glitchy, unpolished gunplay

Like DayZ before it, there are a lot of great ideas in Vigor. Every round brings the same intensity found in the endgame of titles like Fortnite and PUBG. And while it strives to be a combination of those games, and it has some of the pieces of greatness, there ultimately needs to be more to it.

Unfortunately, Vigor never really puts its pieces together in a satisfactory way. It could certainly be a huge F2P shooter for Xbox One if Bohemia Interactive took the time to iron out the glitches and patch things up.

The problem is that it just doesn't feel like that's going to happen.

There is some fun to be had with Vigor, and the sting is dampened by its free-to-play structure. But it's tough to recommend it over other games in a crowded genre.

WiLD

\n
    \n
  • Developer: Wild Sheep Studio
  • \n
  • Platforms: PS4/PS5
  • \n
  • Release date: 2019/2020
  • \n
\n

WiLD has been in development since 2014, and there are rumors that it will appear as a PS5 exclusive at the launch of the new Sony console. For now, it is unknown when exactly Sony will release their new toy.

\n

WiLD is probably one of the most ambitious survival games ever. The game will have an endless procedurally-generated open world, where players will take on a role of a pre-historic human, who tries to survive with the help of small and big wild animals, which can be controlled using special shamanic abilities.

\n

This sounds really cool, but it would be great if there was any indication of the release date. For now, you can join the development team at the official game's website.

Generation Zero

\n
    \n
  • Developer: Avalanche Studios
  • \n
  • Platforms: PC
  • \n
  • Release date: TBA 2019
  • \n
\n

Killing robots is really fun in Generation Zero -- an action-packed cooperative shooter for four players. The game starts with players arriving at a Swedish tourist attraction in the late 1980s, where there is no one left alive.

\n

Mysterious machines emerge from nowhere and start attacking every living being, including you and your friends. The game offers an unusual approach to story-telling and survival, where players will have to figure everything out on their own.

\n

The most interesting aspect of the game is that enemy machines retain all the damage dealt to them by the players. This creates an illusion of realism like no other game on the market right now.

Pandemic Express

\n
    \n
  • Developer: TallBoys
  • \n
  • Platforms: PC
  • \n
  • Release date: TBA 2019
  • \n
\n

Here is an interesting take on a zombie survival cooperative shooter. Pandemic Express focuses mainly on trains as your means to escape from those pesky zombies.

\n

The gameplay footage looks fun, and shows bits of what players can expect from this quirky shooter. The gameplan involves players to catch the train that will help them leave the zombie-infested location.

\n

But there is one problem, apparently there are more zombies on the train that will keep attacking you. So by the look of it, surviving will be really hard in Pandemic Express.

Vigor

\n
    \n
  • Developer: Bohemia Interactive
  • \n
  • Platforms: Xbox One
  • \n
  • Release date: TBA 2019
  • \n
\n

The creator of DayZ makes a comeback in the form of Vigor, an upcoming shoot'n'loot survival game that takes place in the post-apocalyptic Norway. The gameplay is designed for 8-16 players that will have to fight against each other for precious resources in order to build a shelter for themselves.

\n

Vigor will be a free-to-play game, which should attract not only fans of DayZ, but also the rest of the survival community. Too bad the game is exclusive to the Xbox One console, but since it is based on Unreal Engine it should appear at least on PC as well.

    \n
  • Developer: SIE Bend Studio
  • \n
  • Platforms: PS4
  • \n
  • Release date: April 26, 2019
  • \n
\n

Days Gone takes place a couple of years after the global pandemic that  destroyed half of the Earth's population. As a result a major part of the population turned into Freakers, which aren't exactly zombies. According to the game's lore, zombies are dead, while Freakers are still alive.

\n

Also, zombies are always evil, while some Freakers can be peaceful and even retain the ability to think logically. The main protagonist of the game is Deacon St. John, a former criminal and a mercenary.

The game takes place in an open world of the Pacific Northwest, which will include both abandoned territories infested by Freakers and cities with human survivors. Players will have access to various traps, tools, weapons, as well as vehicles.

Left Alive

    \n
  • Developer: Square Enix
  • \n
  • Platforms: PC, PS4
  • \n
  • Release date: March 5, 2019
  • \n
\n

If you've played the Mission Front series of games, then you will have an idea of what to expect from Left Alive, an upcoming survival simulator from Square Enix. The events of Left Alive will take place between Front Mission 5 and Front Mission Evolved.

\n

There are three main characters in the game who act independently of each other. During the game players will be able to switch between them. The world of Left Alive consists of separate levels, where players will have the chance to control battle mechs from the Front Mission universe -- Wanzers.

\n

One of the most interesting features of the game is the possibility to craft your own unique weapons, which should definitely be a lot of fun.

Remnant: From the Ashes

\n
    \n
  • Developer: Gunfire Games
  • \n
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
  • \n
  • Release date: TBA 2019
  • \n
\n

Remnant is a brand new survival shooter that comes from the offices of the Gunfire Games, the developer of Darksiders III. This means that the game will definitely be of high quality and the description sounds really intriguing.

\n

In Remnant the players will fight interdimensional monsters that spawn in a variety of dynamically-generated realms. Each of these worlds will have unique means of survival and monsters that will range from normal sized creatures to some as big as the buildings. These aliens will be so hard to beat that players will have to cooperate in order to survive.

\n

The first revealed trailer looks really promising, so let's keep our fingers crossed for potentially one of the best survival games of  2019.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey

\n
    \n
  • Developer: Panache Digital Games
  • \n
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
  • \n
  • Release date: TBA 2019
  • \n
\n

Ancestors is all about human evolution and the early stages of human history. The story begins in Africa 10 million years ago. Initially, the developer planned to break the game into several short episodes each devoted to different time periods. However, later the decision was made to make all time periods accessible to players from the very beginning.

\n

This is the first game of Panache Digital studio, but at the helm of it stands Patrice Désilets, the creative director behind many Assassin's Creed games. This means that we can at least expect gorgeous landscapes and fun gameplay.

\n

Unfortunately, there isn't much info on the game yet, but the first playable server should be open to public some time next year.

Deadside

\n
    \n
  • Developer: Bad Pixel
  • \n
  • Platforms: PC
  • \n
  • Release date: TBA 2019
  • \n
\n

Here is a realistic survival shooter for those who are tired of killing zombies in their games. Instead of zombies players will hunt animals and focus on survival on the map as large as 225 square kilometers.

\n

The developer promises highly realistic combat and physics of all weapons. For example, bullets will lose speed and change trajectory when penetrating various obstacles. This will make combat especially difficult, which will require players to pay attention to every single detail.

\n

Players will be able to meet NPCs and trade goods with them. There will also be a possibility of killing strangers and looting.

\n

Deadside is expected to enter Early Access at Steam some time in 2019.

Dead Matter

\n
    \n
  • Developer: Quantum Integrity Software Inc.
  • \n
  • Platforms: PC
  • \n
  • Release date: Q1 2019
  • \n
\n

Dead Matter is one of the most anticipated survival games in the works that can be supported by the community through an IndieGoGo campaign. The developer decided to make the game as realistic as possible and that is why you will not see any perks or skill tree system in the game.

\n

The open world will be really huge and cover the territory of 400 square kilometers. The map will be populated by zombies, and one server will be able to handle between 60 to 80 players at once.

\n

Players will be able to unite into different factions with quite intriguing names, such as First Responders, Cannibals, Soldiers, Neighborhood Watch and others. So this really looks like it's going to be a big game as soon as it releases.

World War Z

    \n
  • Developer: Saber Interactive
  • \n
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
  • \n
  • Release date: TBA 2019
  • \n

Surviving alone can be hard, especially in a zombie-infested world of World War Z. That is why the game's developer offers a survival game for four players and not just one.

\n

It is worth noting that World War Z is based on the well-known book, which got that movie with Brad Pitt from 2013. The action unfolds in the same way as it happened in the movie, where characters had to deal with entire swarms of zombies.

\n

The main story campaign of the game focuses on unique survival missions in selected cities, such as New York, Moscow and Jerusalem. The players will be given a chance to use traps, ambushes and environment in general to stay alive using various types of weapons.

Survival games have become a staple of the industry, which is why we see survival games of all sorts to satisfy the great demand. However, making a truly exciting survival game is as hard as it can be.

\n

In the last few years we've seen huge backlashes from the gaming community towards many survival titles that simply couldn't deliver on the promises (e.g. No Man's Sky at launch). But this only means that gamers are really passionate about games they want to play, and that is why we've chosen a number of new and upcoming survival titles that should bring a smile to your face in 2019.

\n

This short list includes games from such acclaimed developers like Sony,  Square Enix and Bohemia Interactive, as well as, ambitious newcomers that will surprise many people with their unusual and innovative gameplay mechanics.
