EA Succumbs to the Dark Side, Cancelling Another Star Wars Game

The Star Wars: Battlefront spinoff is one with the Force now, even though the Force wasn't one with it.

Kotaku’s Jason Schreier recently reported on yet another canceled EA Star Wars project, the third in four years. Schreier says this time, it was a semi-open-world Star Wars: Battlefront spinoff that got the axe.

The game was codenamed “Viking,” and its development followed the two previously canceled projects — Amy Hennig’s “Ragtag” and EA Vancouver’s “Orca” — as a way to “fill a financial hole.” EA originally planned for the title to launch in fall 2020 for the next-gen PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. After seeing the development timetables and realizing it wasn’t going to work, though, executives decided to scrap the entire project.

The issue was, as is often the case with EA, conflicts with development studios. EA Vancouver was working on “Viking” with assets from the abandoned “Orca” project, but then San Francisco-based Criterion was brought on board as well.

Schreier’s sources from EA said there were simply too many people involved and too many challenges coordinating production between the two studios in separate countries.

So, that leaves us with… apparently nothing Star Wars-related for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X launch lineups. Along with a Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sequel, EA is also reportedly working on an “unusual” Star Wars title. Rumors are also still a’swirling about the Knights of the Old Republic remake titles, so perhaps there will be something in that.
