SNK Playmore set to release The King of Fighters XIV on August 23

SNK Playmore announces KoF XIV release for August. New trailers feature all 50 characters at launch. SNK Playmore changes company logo back to SNK.

Today, SNK Playmore announced that The King of Fighters XIV will be releasing in America on August 23. The announcement was made via a set of new trailers featuring all 50 characters available at launch.

The trailers also focuses on new characters, including Team China's Shun'ei (whom is integral to the story) and Nakoruru from Team Another world. The gameplay trailer highlighted some of 14th entry's features, including a story mode, a training mode (online and offline), an online vs mode, and an art gallery.

SNK Playmore has also changed their company logo back to SNK, and introduced the new company slogan -- "The future is now." SNK Playmore's decision was two fold; they wanted to return to their business image they held during the years of the Neo Geo and they also it to be more appealing  to the global market where SNK is more recognized than SNK Playmore.

Fans can look forward to slugging it out in 50 different ways with The King of Fighters XIV on August 23.

Um why is this PS4 only? That seems like your shooting yourself in the foot. I get SFV guiding this change, but will the FGC move forward with it?

I don't think it has much of a choice.

It's obvious Sony is buying the exclusivity on these fighters and making a power play to force the FGC to shift to PS4 this gen. It's unfortunate for a huge chunk of the FGC that went Xbox One under the assumption the genre would still be home on Xbox.

I mean, this year alone has Guilty Gear, Street Fighter, and King of Fighters on PS4. Not to mention smaller token fighters like JoJo's. There's always a boom of other FG releases the same year as Street Fighter and unfortunately this time around all those titles are bound to one console.

It's possible SFV is a down-low timed exclusive but it's going to be hard to look toward Xbox One for fighters for a while. For now it's looking like the FGC really doesn't have a choice but to shift except KI fans.

Ashley hit the nail on the head. I also maybe XB1 sales may have had something to do with it as well.

KIller Instincts is the only fighter I see on XB1

I'd be inclined to believe XB1 sales have a lot to do with it outside of SFV. Capcom got pulled around with exclusivity deals last gen and they still are.

But in terms of fighters (and gaming in general) right now, the Xbox line doesn't fly in Japan. It never has and it never will, they don't do foreign hardware. So all Japanese shareholders are seeing is these big foreign installbases on PS4 and assume it's the way to go.

Fighting games are one of the few genres that are very console-specific these days and Japanese companies and shareholders have displayed time and time again they have very little idea of how the Western markets work--to them it initially seems the bigger PS4 base means more sales for their games (and the gap between both consoles being so large overseas has given JP creators the impression XB1 is not a good longterm bet since most sales are overseas). That's it, there's no attention given to previous generation genre community demographics. The shift to Sony for fighters runs on the assumption that cores all picked up PS4s already anyway. SFV is a good example of this not being the case yet and unfortunately the FGC is between a rock and a hard place on this one.

Now that you mention it, it makes so much sense. Why would a Japanese IP be on a foreign console? Your a genius Ashley.

Its great to see King of Fighters get a western release. But its a shame it will only release on PS4.

I wouldn't rule out a PC release someday.

Same. The FGC got established on the 360 last gen, it's frustrating that so many fighters have shifted to PlayStation.

That said not much could daunt my hype for KoF14. KoF's always been my fighter.

Yeah last gen was all 360 for fighters. The landscape changed plenty with SFV going PS4.

Anyway, I look forward to playing KOF XIV its been 6 years too long since the last KOF.

If SNK can be believed and 14 really is similar to 98/DM99 and 2002, we're in for a treat.

yes, I'm hoping for a 98/99 style myself.
