Jake Gyllenhaal Tries Video Game Movies Again With The Division

At least he won't be playing a Persian man this time around.

Sources at Variety broke news today that among Ubisoft’s slate of game properties headed to the silver screen on the heels of Michael Fassebender in Assassin’s Creed are a Paramount-produced Splinter Cell film starring Tom Hardy, and a return to video game film adaptations for Prince of Persia actor Jake Gyllenhaal with The Division.

While he stars in the unnamed lead role, Gyllenhaal is also listed as a producer, so maybe he will have the opportunity to be more directly involved with creative decisions on the upcoming big budget film. Sources also say the studio is still looking for a writer to work on the screenplay.

Slow-burning and passionate projects like Nightcrawler and Southpaw have all but eradicated the memory of Gyllenhaal’s last outing in a video game adaptation, the unfortunately white-washed and generic Prince of Persia, so here’s hoping The Division‘s more accessible source material provides a better vehicle for games on film.
