Top 10 Fallout 4 easter eggs

Fallout games have the best easter eggs! This is our top 10 easter eggs found in Fallout 4 so far.
This article is over 9 years old and may contain outdated information

Games from Bethesda may be buggy or not always up to modern graphics standards, but they’re infinitely fun and full of exciting pop-culture references. Fallout 4 is no exception, and it’s packed with various easter eggs and secrets. The developers are huge fans of TV shows, movies and other games from the 80s and 90s. Some are well-known, while others are a complete mystery. Nevertheless, we’ve prepared additional links for you to check out, if you find yourselves puzzled by some of these easter eggs.

Let’s not waste the precious time, and move right on to the top 10 Fallout 4 easter eggs we've found in the game so far.

Stonehenge

If you wander around woodland, you will stumble upon a structure composed of scrap cars. This is a very clear reference to Stonehenge, a mysterious ancient artifact made of gigantic stones located in Wiltshire, England. It was used thousands of years ago by prehistoric people (or aliens) as a burial place, or simply a clock or a calendar.

The function of this structure in the game is not clear. Possibly it is used in the same way as the real Stonehenge -- but after all, it’s just a wink from the development team, like many other easter eggs in the game. There’s some loot at the central part of the monument, so don’t forget to grab it.

Sunken Cat Boat

In order to find this extremely weird easter egg, you need to travel far away from the Diamond City into the ocean and locate an abandoned boat. Then jump into the water and reach the bottom -- even if it seems impossible, as the muddy water completely prevents you from seeing anything. But keep going and soon the water will get clearer. You will notice an overturned boat; that’s where you need to swim.

When you get inside the boat, look at the ceiling, which is actually a floor. There you will see lots of pictures of cute kittens. At first this may seem strange, but apparently, before the tragic events of Fallout 4, this boat was a sort of playground for kids who loved cats very much.

Donkey Kong

It’s not an actual Donkey Kong game that is referenced in this easter egg (we know very well that Nintendo would not appreciate the effort), but the gameplay gives it away immediately. The mini-game is titled Red Menace.

You can play this mini-game after grabbing a holotape at the Vault 111’s recreation terminal. This is possible right after your character gets awakened from the cryogenic sleep in the very beginning of the game. Just follow the directions on your mini-map and you should be able to find it pretty easily.

Now, this is not the only classic mini-game referenced in Fallout 4. You can find Zeta Invaders in Diamond City, which is a homage to Space Invaders, and many others, such as Grognak the Barbarian, Pipfall, Atomic Command, etc.

Monkey Bomb

The crazy monkey from Toy Story 3 appears in Fallout 4 in various places as a pretty annoying trap that ignites an explosion after approaching it. There are already enough explosive traps in the game, but looks like Bethesda wanted to challenge us a little bit more.

Anyway, if you see the clapping monkey, approach it carefully. When you see the eyes glowing – run away! It’s better to just pop its head off as soon as you can, but it may not be that easy, as they appear in some completely unexpected places.

Jaws

The best easter eggs remind us of our favorite things. Jaws is the beloved horror movie of many generations, and it’s a real treat from Bethesda to include this purely visual reference to the film in Fallout 4.

If you travel to Vault 81, you will be able to locate an abandoned boat at the river nearby. After getting on board, you will see a massive shark/dolphin hybrid and a human skeleton that wears the same clothes as the captain of the boat in the film.

Don’t believe it? Check this scene from the movie and make up your own mind. Many fans believe it’s a spot-on reference to Jaws ,and they must be right.

Cheers Bar

Travel to Vault 114 and head up north a little bit. There you will find a bar called “Prost,” a German word for “Cheers.” Maybe you’ve never heard of the early 80s TV show called Cheers, but your parents probably have.

The TV show takes place in the Boston’s bar, Cheers, where people meet and share their life experiences with each other while drinking or working. Even though the bar in Fallout 4 resembles the design from the TV show quite precisely, it’s nowhere near as cheerful.

Alien Crash Site and The Laser Blaster

Everyone who played Fallout 3 remembers the iconic scene with the Mothership Zeta alien crash. Fallout 4 returns with another awesome event – this time it’s an alien spaceship crash landing with some exciting sequence of events to follow.

Apparently the event is randomized, so you never know when and where the crash will take place. Those who get lucky enough to witness this huge easter egg in the game need to trace the green fluid appearing everywhere on the crash site to a nearby cave. There you will find an alien in a classic-looking space suit. You need to kill the poor creature and loot his stash, which includes a cool weapon - a laser blaster.

If the new alien pistol is not powerful enough, you can always upgrade and modify it to your specific needs.

Good Will Hunting

There’s another, quite unexpected, movie reference in Fallout 4Good Will Hunting, starring Matt Damon. This easter egg can be found in the CIT rotunda, the building belonging to The Institute, a mysterious organization within the Commonwealth that's known for possessing advanced technology.

When you enter the rotunda, go left and follow a series of corridors until you reach a dead janitor’s body. There’s a blackboard on the wall, a few pieces of chalk on the table and a specific drawing. This is exactly the same drawing made by Matt Damon’s character in the movie. You can watch the clip here.

It looks like The Institute had its own mathematical genius disguised as a janitor. Too bad he’s not much use to them anymore.

The Cask of Amontillado

Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Cask of Amontillado” was briefly referenced previously in Fallout: New Vegas’ “Heist of the Century” quest. Now, Fallout 4 developers gave more than just a nod to the famous Poe story.

When you get to The Castle, the former headquarters of the Minutemen in Boston, located east of the Gwinnett Restaurant and Brewery, go to the very end of the tunnels. There you will find a whole crate of Amontillado wine and a skeleton entombed in a wall, which is a direct homage to "The Cask of Amontillado".

In brief for those who aren't familiar with it, the story tells about a character named Montresor luring his victim, Fortunato, to an underground crypt in his family catacombs, where he chains him to a wall and buries him alive.

Blade Runner

Out of all movie easter eggs in Fallout 4, this must be the best one. It pays homage to probably the most stylish and atmospheric science-fiction film of the last century – Blade Runner. This easter egg was inevitable, as the game utilizes one of the core ideas of the movie - the synth droids.

You can find it by travelling to the Mass Fusion containment shed in the Commonwealth. Walk around the building and hop on top of the roof. There you will witness a scene resembling the final minutes of Blade Runner, involving Harrison Ford’s character Deckard and Rutger Hauer’s character Roy.

If you haven’t seen the movie yet, then take your time and watch the director’s Final Cut released in 2007 – that’s the best version. For now, you can watch the scene in this clip.
