60 FPS Uncharted 4 Might Not Happen

Uncharted 4 at 60 FPS is really hard to do.

Last year, Naughty Dog announced the next installment of the Uncharted series, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, for the PS4.

The studio claimed that everything seen in the trailer (which runs at 30 FPS) was captured in-engine, and that the game would run at 1080p on the PS4. Naughty Dog also said that they were aiming to get the game to run at 60 frames-per-second.

Since the original claim, Naughty Dog has backed off of their original goal. Previously, game director Bruce Stanley said that they would do whatever was best for the game, even if it meant going sub-60 FPS. The studio has shown interest in trying to keep pushing the hardware, and they are trying to optimize as well as they can, but 60 FPS may be impossible.

Game director Neil Druckmann states that trying to get the game to run at 60 FPS is “Really f**king hard.”

“That’s true for any game. It was really hard on The Last of Us Remastered, and that’s a game we had finished and we knew exactly what the end result needs to look like. And here [with Uncharted 4] we’re trying to push the boundaries of what this game can look like; and do realistic, real-time cutscenes; and trying to do 60fps is really hard.”

So whether Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End runs at 60 FPS is something that depends on Naughty Dog’s ability to optimize the PS4’s hardware.
