When gamers normally think of playing video games, it’s usually something as easy as grabbing your controller, popping in a game and having fun. But for some, it’s not as easy as it sounds. For the 60 million Americans with disabilities, the fun that we’re supposed to have playing video games can become a daunting task. Fortunately, this is where the AbleGamers Foundation comes in.

The AbleGamers Foundation is a public charity that hopes to allow children and adults with disabilities to enjoy what video games have to offer. As the focus of their mission, the AbleGamers Foundation works to make games accessible because they recognize that people with disabilities can enjoy a “greater quality of life” and “develop a rich social life that gaming can bring.” The organization has spoken at focus groups and beta community events, talked at industry events such as PAX and GDC, and contributed to online content sites like GameAccessiblity.org.

The AbleGamers Foundation is currently accepting applications for their AbleGamers 2013 Summer of Fun Grant Program. It is a one-time grant to be used for gaming equipment, and it is open to people with disabilities of all ages. If you are interested, or someone you know may be, you can visit the AbleGamers Foundation website for more information. You can also access the application for the AbleGamers 2013 Summer of Fun Grant Program here.
