The upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie, originally slated for a late summer 2015 release, won’t be coming out until 2016.
Script rewrites and scheduling conflicts are the main reason that the movie has been pulled from the 2015 calendar according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The adaptation of the Ubisoft video game, starring Michael Fassbender, was set to open Aug. 7 but won’t be ready in time, according to insiders. The script has gone through several rewrites, while the production itself has grappled with scheduling issues. Fox insiders say Assassin’s Creed will now hit theaters in 2016.
Other than Fassbender, no other actors or actresses in the cast have been announced.
The movie will be directed by Justin Kurzel (who is working with Fassbender on another movie) and will be produced by Ubisoft Motion Pictures, New Regency, and most notably, Frank Marshall, who helped produce a number of Indiana Jones movies with Steven Spielberg. 20th Century Fox will be distributing the film, a change from Sony Entertainment. No reason was given.
The Assassin’s Creed movie has been in development since May 2011. It’s had a rocky history with plenty of changes behind the scenes, and this is just a another setback for the film.
