Axiom Verge 2 Won’t Make Its Fall 2020 Release Date

Axiom Verge fans will have to wait a little bit longer for the game's sequel, according to the developer.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Axiom Verge 2, the follow-up to 2015’s very good Axiom Verge, won’t make its original release window of Fall 2020. Due to various circumstances, including a few small development hurdles and the COVID-19 pandemic, the game has been delayed into 2021.

In the first big news on Axiom Verge 2 since 2019, developer Thomas Happ confirmed the delay in a recent blog post (thanks, IGN), saying that while he hoped to make the initial Fall 2020 release date a year ago when he shared the game’s trailer during a Nintendo Indie World showcase, things haven’t panned out since then. Happ now hopes to have Axiom Verge 2 done by “early 2021.”

Predicting the future is hard and never more so than in 2020. About this time last year, I released the first (and still to date only) trailer for Axiom Verge 2, which ended boldly with the words “COMING FALL 2020” in all caps.

Alas, despite doing everything I could to make good on my prediction, it will not come to pass. I apologize to all of Axiom Verge’s fans who have been waiting to learn more about this universe.

He noted that things could still change between now and the first part of 2021, but he is doing everything he can to meet that new release window, while also making Axiom Verge 2 the game fans have been hoping for. “Hopefully sooner in that window than later,” he said, “but I don’t want to disappoint anyone so I’ll just leave it there.”

The full post can be found via the link at the bottom of this article, but Happ said that designing the game’s enemies and nailing down the game’s Address Disruptor like tool have taken more effort than anticipated. He also cited the game’s art direction and the current pandemic as two other factors that have led to the new release window.

Axiom Verge was released on March 31, 2015, on PlayStation 4, before making its way to PC, PlayStation Vita, WiiU, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It, too, was delayed out of its original release window for certain platforms. Stay tuned to GameSkinny for more on Axiom Verge 2 in the coming months.
