Baldur’s Gate 3 Player Discovers Secret Developer Room

Is it possible to enter the developer room and discover hidden assets? Let's find out.

Even though Larian is working hard to iron out all bugs and errors, some entertaining glitches are still bound to happen. One Reddit player accidentally discovered a glitched developer room while in the lower city of Baldur’s Gate 3. Let’s see what they found.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Player Discovers Hidden Glitch Area

Game developers usually keep 3D models and audio assets in the game world, albeit in hidden developer rooms. One Reddit user (Act 3 Spoilers) reported their spouse discovered one of these developer rooms while doing the Save the Gondians quest in the lower city of Baldur’s Gate 3.

As they put it, they were towards the end of the quest, confronting Wulbren and the Iron Hands. However, as the quest comes to a close, the temporary companion, Zanner Toobin, doesn’t leave the party as he usually does once Save the Gondians ends.

Cue the Benny Hill theme — When the player switched to Zanner Toobin he found that he disappeared and reappeared in the developer room standing next to various models. They encountered Zanner standing next to various models of Haarlep from the House of Healing, a model for Shar, and various other miscellaneous assets like the Voice of the Absolute.

Apparently, the player then fought some of the models and interacted with them in various ways. What a bizarre look behind the developer curtain. So, can this be recreated?

Can You Enter the Developer Room in Baldur’s Gate 3?

While I’m not sure how to recreate this exact glitch with Toobin since it seems like a random bug, I have seen a way to enter the developer room reliably. More specifically, this glitch looks similar to the one in MaeQC’s recent Baldur’s Gate 3 speedrun for the charity-based Games Done Quick project. MaeQC is a professional BG3 speed runner, and in the mentioned speed run, she uses a technique and a series of moves to enter the developer room.

You can follow her detailed explanation at the 27:25 timestamp and again at 38:12. Essentially, MaeQC is exploiting Orin’s shapeshifting encounters where Orin teleports around the map to follow her into the developer room. She does this through several steps, and I’ll do my best to summarize:

  • First, she kills her Tav and picks up their body with a character who’s at least a Level 6 Conjuration Wizard with the Benign Transposition: Teleport ability.
  • She approaches an Orin encounter like the one in the sewers or the journalist one in Rivington by jumping her Wizard to Orin’s shapeshifter location with high Strength (She seems to be also using Enhanced Leap or the Jump spell).
  • Then, in mid-air, she uses the Astral Prism artifact to trigger a cutscene and interrupt Orin, starting one herself.
  • Mae then uses Pickpocket to place Tav’s dead body into Orin’s inventory.
  • From here, Mae summons a Mage Hand and orders it to Shove Orin.
  • At the exact moment the Mage Hand shoves Orin, Mae uses Benign Transposition: Teleport to teleport her Wizard to her dead Tav’s location, which is in Orin’s inventory, by clicking on their profile picture on the left.

And now MaeQC is in the developer room. I highly recommend you check out the full video at the given timestamps to understand the process.

Does Developer Room Glitch Work in Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 6?

The glitch apparently works on all BG3 patches as MaeQC points out since Orin enters the developer room for a moment when shoved with the dead Tav in her inventory. That allows the Wizard character to follow the dead Tav into the developer room using Benign Transposition. Mae does an excellent job of explaining the entire process in her Games Done Quick BG3 speed run above.

Hopefully, Larian will not fix this glitch for a while because it’s not only highly entertaining but also helps with popular BG3 speedrun strategies. Check out more articles about the game on our Baldur’s Gate 3 game hub.
