Banjo-Kazooie Spiritual Successor Coming Regardless of Kickstarter Success

Playtonic Games promise that Project Ukulele will come eventually, even if the Kickstarter fails--just not on every platform.

If you don’t live under a rock, you know that the team of ex-Rare developers known as Playtonic Games are currently working on the spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie (and Banjo-Tooie), Project Ukulele. We’ve known that a Kickstarter for the project was coming some time in May, but it was finally revealed via Twitter that the official launch is on May 1st.

However, unlike most Kickstarters, this isn’t an all-or-nothing deal. In an FAQ released on Playtonic’s website, one of crowd-fundings most dreaded questions was asked: “What happens if the Kickstarter fails?”

The answer? Comforting:

“We’ll carry on making the game and release it when it’s ready. But the Kickstarter will help us add many features and platform versions – not to mention cool swag – that wouldn’t be possible otherwise.”

Whew. It’s relieving to know that the game will come eventually, even if the Kickstarter goes south; but we must wonder if this is a naïve move on the team’s part. Will platform inclusion and physical rewards be enough to make fans throw in their hard-earned dollars?

I can’t imagine that the campaign will do anything short of amazing. Based on the attention the team has managed to gather by word of mouth alone, it’s obvious people want the game. Combine that with pledge awards based on fan-demand: art books, limited editions, toys, clothing, other games, and you’ve got a recipe for a successful Kickstarter!

What do you think? Will you be funding Project Ukulele? Are you in it for the swag, or because you want to see it on the console you own? Let us know in the comments below.
