Leading off Electronic Arts’ E3 2015 conference was the worldwide premier of the trailer for the next installment in the Mass Effect series, Mass Effect: Andromeda.

The trailer starts off ambiguous – the sound of Johnny Cash’s “Ghost Riders in the Sky” echoing across a desert-like landscape. The perspective shifts to an icescape, then an alien swamp, an asteroid.., each scene rendered upon a holographic display. As the figure flipping through the display makes his choice and sends his ship soaring towards his chosen destination, he turns towards the camera, and strides off screen in his N7 armor.

This game is very much a new adventure, taking place far away from and long after the events of the original trilogy.

Taking place in the Andromeda Galaxy, Mass Effect: Andromeda features different planets, a vast galaxy map, and the tools of hands-on exploration including a jetpack and the new and improved Mako. We see familiar weapons and armor in the hands of a new figure. In Mass Effect: Andromeda, we will see exploration, we will have action, and we will engage in the kind of in-depth story that BioWare is famous for, all set in the beloved Mass Effect universe.

You will play a human, male or female […] and through it all, you will have a new team of adventurers to work with, learn from, fight alongside of, and fall in love with.

Despite the hopes of many of Mass Effect’s fans, BioWare has confirmed that the protaganist of Mass Effect: Andromeda will be human. Players will have the opportunity to play as either gender and will gain many companions through their journeys. Details are incredibly sketchy at the moment, but it is safe to say that Mass Effect: Andromeda goes far beyond anything that the Mass Effect series has offered before, if only by stretching the bounds of the universe to encompass an entirely new area of exploration.

The E3 announcement and subsequent blog post by BioWare has left fans of the Mass Effect series with many unanswered questions. Will there be new races? Will ME:A establish a canon from the Mass Effect Trilogy or will your choices in the original three games still matter? Will it still be a single-player story or will there finally be co-op available? How are they traveling FTL without Mass Relays? And, most important…

Is that a Krogan?

Mass Effect: Andromeda is anticipated to release during the holiday season, 2016. There is no word yet on which platforms it will be carried on, however, previous installments of the Mass Effect series are available on PC, Mac, Xbox, and PlayStation.
