Blizzard All-Stars has been in the works for a long time, and Blizzard continues to keep their mouths shut about the project. Well, mostly. There is some new information about the upcoming MOBA that those of you waiting on the game may want to know.

Blizzard’s Chris Sigaty spoke with Eurogamer on the topic of Blizzard All-Stars, revealing two things: The game will not be a special mode or add-on for a pre-existing game (StarCraft 2), and it will be free to play with micro-transactions.

StarCraft 2 is a box,” said Sigaty, “We intend to do something different with the business model in Blizzard All-Stars, something more closely resembling the other types of games in that genre, the MOBA-style games that are out there today, and being able to sell smaller amounts of things to players, the things they want.”

Blizzard All-Stars will be the company’s first test with the free to play business model, but it’s not a surprise considering the stiff competition from League of Legends and Dota 2. The genre is the biggest in PC gaming right now, and it may be a pool in which Blizzard’s name alone would not be able to make them float. Choosing to go with a free to play model in a MOBA is a smart decision, no matter how you look at it.
