BlizzCon 2017: Blizzard Announces World Of Warcraft Classic Servers

Finally, World of Warcraft is getting the official Classic servers players have been begging for.

It’s that time of year again when fans of World of Warcraft wait with anticipation to hear what big news might be coming out of BlizzCon. And, well… We have some pretty big news. During today’s opening ceremony, Warcraft executive producer J. Allen Brack announced that the company would be launching something players have been asking for for a long, long time — Vanilla (or Classic) WoW servers.

Brack teased convention goers with the new servers, stating that they would offer an “authentic, Blizzard-quality classic experience.” He noted that this did not mean the “actual launch experience,” but that Blizzard wanted to offer players something that would reproduce the things they all loved about the game when it first launched in 2004.

Over the years, some WoW players have gone so far as to create their own vanilla servers — potentially risking the wrath of the developer as a result.  So, it’s a bit surprising that Blizzard hasn’t tried this before now. That said, Brack did offer some explanation as to why Blizzard has waited this long, noting the amount of work that goes into such an undertaking.

It’s also worth noting that official Classic servers are not a feature that every World of Warcraft player wants. Many believe that they will have a negative impact on the full game by dividing the player base and hurt the overall game experience as a result.

Stay tuned to GameSkinny for more new and information on WoW‘s upcoming vanilla servers as it develops.
