Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Zombies Rumors and Details

Zombies might be coming to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Here's what we know, and what could be on the horizon.

Zombies mode has been a staple Call of Duty since its introduction in World at War almost 15 years ago. With Modern Warfare 3 on the horizon, you may be wondering if it’s making a return. Here’s what we know about Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 zombies.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Zombies Rumors and Details

Past entries have dabbled in similar horde modes. The first MW3‘s Survival Mode, the Ghosts activity in Ghosts, and Sledgehammer Games’ own take on the undead in Advanced Warfare are just several. While we don’t know for sure if this year’s installment will have it, the rumor mill is awash in possibilities.

How Modern Warfare 3 Zombies Fits In

Zombies is actually a fairly good fit for the new direction of the franchise. CoD has spent the last several years building on its Warzone game mode. If the rumored Las Almas map is coming to Warzone 2.0 with Modern Warfare 3. If so, it would make sense to use some (or all) of the work already done as a foundation for the mode. Many of Modern Warfare 2‘s multiplayer maps were pulled directly from the current Al Mazrah Warzone map, so retooling Zombies to fit on Las Almas would be a solid resource-saving measure.

If the information coming out of the likes of Insider Gaming is true, that’s exactly what’s happening. Rather than a traditional undead horde mode from Treyarch (which is on tap for 2024’s CoD), Modern Warfare 3 zombies could see a return to or evolution of the Outbreak from Black Ops: Cold War.

How Could MW3 Zombies Play Out?

That said, we know next to nothing about any of these speculations. Everything is coming from the IG leak and information from a community member named Metaphor on X. The latter discusses the layout of Las Almas to resemble both Las Almas and the Blackout map from Black Ops 4. If it’s like Outbreak, Modern Warfare 3 zombies could use a gameplay loop like this:

  • Drop into a small section of Las Almas already populated by objectives like current Warzone modes.
  • Complete a bespoke or game-selected number of objectives to open an upgrade table with gear perks, streaks, and other Zombies-specific benefits.
  • Travel to a new location and repeat one or two times, fighting off hordes of zombies the whole time.
  • Have a final, horde-mode-style battle to the death a la’ the end of Left 4 Dead campaign missions
  • Exfil.

If we look to previous Infinity Ward takes in Survival and Infection, there’s perhaps something to be gleaned. It’s likely Modern Warfare 3 zombies will tie into the campaign, even if it presents an alternate universe version of events. Maybe Makarov found something in the bowls of a forgotten ruin and unleashed a force even he could not contain. Perhaps there’s a competitive element to things, with Captain Price’s team trying to complete objectives to stop Makarov’s allies and vice versa. Are aliens involved again? Who’s to say?

Those are the Modern Warfare 3 zombies rumors and details we have for now. We hopefully don’t have to wait too long to find out, as the reveal of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 comes on August 17, 2023.
