Red Hook Studios title, Darkest Dungeon has been a big indie success story since it’s release in January. Next week owners of the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita will be able to join the hardcore ranks. Darkest Dungeon is a hardcore RPG about the psychological stresses of adventuring. The game is set to release on the consoles October 27.
What is Darkest Dungeon?
Darkest Dungeon is a roguelike dungeon crawling RPG. The player takes on the role of an heir to an estate, left to them by a relative. While seeking fame and fortune the relative opened portals to dark dimensions, unleashing horrors upon the estate.
As the heir, you must hire adventurers to put an end to what your relative began and close the portals. Witnessing the horrors from the dark dimensions, however, will take its toll on them. If you are not careful they will begin to suffer psychological problems such as paranoia or become masochistic, as two examples.
To succeed you will need to provide your adventurers with new equipment and correct provisions. You will need to upgrade the town to its former glory. Most of all you will need to use strategy and tactics to bring your adventurers home alive. Only once you have destroyed the horrors that dwell around the estate, will you being able to enter the darkest dungeon.
Darkest Dungeon’s features
The game has an array of different and unique features to experience. The features includes:
- An affliction system
- Hand-drawn gothic crow quill art style
- Innovative turn-based combat against a host of diabolical monsters
- Narration system to celebrate success or failure
- 14 (and counting) playable heroes including Plague Doctor, Hellion, and Leper.
- Camp to heal wounds or deliver inspiring speeches
- Rest weary shell-shocked adventurers in the town’s tavern or abbey to keep their psychological state in check
- Classic CRPG features such as permadeath, procedural dungeons, and replayability.
The unique mechanics and features of Darkest Dungeon make it something quite different from anything else. Not to mention it’s beautiful, unique and well-designed art style.
Enter the Darkest Dungeon
A week after the games full release January 19th, 2016, the developer announced that the game had sold over 650,000 copies. It comes as no surprising considering the huge amount of attention the game was getting. This was in large due to its unique mechanics and attractive art style.
Darkest Dungeon will be $24.99. It will also feature cross-buy and cross-save support. You need only buy it once and you will be able to play it on both your PS4 and PSVita. PS Plus members can also expect a 20% discount off the game.
