(Update at bottom)
Darkspore was a good idea. It took several staples of both action and RPG games and combined them in new ways, something rare in a world of Diablo clones. The game was, however, plagued by consistent server issues based around requiring a connection to EA’s servers in order to access most of the game’s features. Recently, however, the bugs have gotten worse and worse, with most players completely unable to play the game.
Now messages have arisen on the forums clarifying the issue, unpleasant as the clarity is.
Darkspore is no longer developed, it is for almost all intents and purposes an abandoned title. If you cannot play the game & have flicked through technical issues for any fixes, then contact EA Customer Support; especially if it regards CD-Keys or refunds.
Steam has, in response, removed the game from its store to prevent any further players from picking up the “abandoned” title. Curiously, as of writing the game is still available for purchase on Origin, with multiple media outlets looking to EA for comment.
Did I mention Darkspore is a game from Maxis? The company behind SimCity?
It just makes everything seem so much clearer.
Update
In a bizarre turn of events, the above quoted forum post is no longer on Darkspore’s forums, replaced instead by a notice that the issue rendering the game unplayable has been resolved and stating that the game will continue to be supported.
