Fallout 4’s crafting will be totally optional

Bethesda‘s Pete Hines told GamesRadar yesterday that the crafting system in Fallout 4 will be a completely optional side of the game. This comes to a relief for many who enjoy the story more than the quest to be the biggest badass of the wasteland with the most firepower.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas had the precursor of crafting with repairing weapons and using a work or reloading bench.

Repairing weapons in poor condition was not optional (if you wanted to keep that particular weapon). And only a few weapons were worth making at the workbench.

Players can use as much or as little as they’d like from the crafting system. Hines explains, “you could use your time intricately constructing and tuning your own laser muskets or you can just buy the bits.” And then again, you could just buy or loot the weapon as is.

Hines’s philosophy is that once players figure the crafting system out, they will “want to do more.”
