Heart of the Cards: Wargame Airland Battle brings decks and strategy to the genre

It's time to D-D-D-Duel... with TANKS!
This article is over 11 years old and may contain outdated information

Fresh off the success of Wargame: European Escalation (which had a rather sucessful sale run on Steam recently) Focus interactive brings up the name game in the series, Airland Battle.

Set in the Cold War era,  players are gen access to the 800 units of that era, to build and create their own personalized army for battle both offline and online ranging from tanks to helicopters to infantry.

How will you build your army? Why, with a deck of military cards of course!

Here’s how it works as of today. Each map and area is given a set amount of points to spend on units based on the map you have picked, the experience each card has, and how specialised your deck is. Focusing your decks on specific styles such as airborne attacks or support, will grant you more bonuses to actions along with special prototype units of your army.

Naturally, you might find yourself wondering why you would build an army for mobile infantry when there is an enemy doing airborne attacks. Surely you would be wiped out right?

Not if your friends are there for you.

The servers of the game go as high as 10v10 certain maps, meaning if each player were to specialise in their own way, they can control a formidable army indeed. You could have most of the team cover ground control while you take to the skies. A tank assault is much stronger when you have your buddies dropping infantry over the enemy’s head with helicopters.

Support is support no matter what game you play or how you play it.

Of course, with a game this vast and interesting, the Wargame

community will lap it up, and the mods will soon start to come. Perhaps there will be one that pushes the game into Modern Warfare territory. Who knows. Already extra community maps are being created, so stay tuned to see what the players have to offer.

Wargame Airland Battle is slated for a May 22nd release. Pre-order the game and gain access to the beta right away. Oh, and side note – if you own Wargame: European Escalation, you get it at 25% off! Get to it!
