Hey Minecraft! At 100 Million, You’re Bigger than Most Countries (and Your GDP Ain’t Bad, Either)

We examine Minecraft's growth the only way you can nowadays, by comparing it to some of the largest countries on Earth (and also to luxury yachts - sorry, couldn't help it).
This article is over 10 years old and may contain outdated information

Markus “Notch” Persson is noted for a lack of interest in fancy marketing or PR tactics, so it’s no surprise that the world heard about Minecraft hitting a huge milestone via a simple tweet.

I got an email. We’ve reached 100 million registered users on the original Minecraft. 14.3% conversion rate to paid accounts. Wow. 😀 <3

— Markus Persson (@notch) February 25, 2014

If each of those paid accounts is worth $27 (the cost of a PC version of Minecraft is $26.95), that puts the total earnings, just for the game (let’s nevermind the wildly popular merchandise) at a whopping $386,100,000.

That’s nearly 400 Million Dollars

… But only 8 of these 47 million dollar yachts.

(You’d get more for your money if you went for one without an on board golf course.)

At 100,000,000 registered players, Minecraft’s player base is also bigger than the populations of most countries

Citizens of Minecraft, rejoice! Wait, what do we call you… Mincraftians? Minecrafters? Minecraftish?

And based on the way Minecraft has sold on other platforms, we’re pretty certain it’s actually claimed the 11th, and possibly even the 10th spot on this list when you consider all registered players, not just PC.

Which Leaves Us With Some Questions

  • What is the National Bird of Minecraft?
  • What is the National Food of Minecraft?
  • What is Minecraft’s National Flower?

These are important questions that need to be resolved before countries can begin receiving your delegates, so what say you, citizens of Minecraft?
