The Greenlit Continue? is the latest project by artist and developer Jason Oda, whose previous work includes The Perfect Strangers and Skrillex Quest. In the self-described “artsy, philosophical, action game,” players step into the shoes of a “dead, failed video game character” facing obsolescence and tasked with finding some sense of inner peace in the face of permanent deletion. Players traverse the mess that is the Random Access Memory in search of lightning and prayers, the latter for clearing paths and the former for building shelters, to aid them in their pursuit to come to terms with their imminent demise.

Continue? also features randomly assigned characters and stages, and new game pulls from a pool of six dead video game characters and six out of eleven surreal stages.

On one hand, Continue? asks “what happens to dead video game characters?” On a deeper level, the “real story is that Continue? is an existential metaphor that explores the finite nature of existence and the beauty and tyranny of our desires within it.”

If this sounds strange, it’s because it’s supposed to be, according to Oda, who encourages players to reach out via Twitter, Facebook, and through the official website with their own interpretations and impressions on the game.

“This game is weird. You’ve probably figured that out by now. Everything in it however, has a deeper meaning behind it. All of the strange places you go to, people you talk to, and scenarios you go through are part of a greater idea that I hope you spend a second or two trying to figure out and interpret…or not. You can also just play the damn thing.”

Continue? is available on Steam and through the Humble Store at the discounted price of $7.99. For a closer look at the game, check out the launch trailer below.
