Infinite Warfare — Haters Gonna Hate (and Activision Doesn’t Mind)

Hirshberg weighs in on why gamers are really mad about Infinite Warfare
Hirshberg weighs in on why gamers are really mad about Infinite Warfare

The recent Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare trailer is receiving major backlash from its respected community.

The Infinite Warfare trailer has over 14 million views and one million dislikes ranking it among the top 10 most disliked videos on YouTube. CoD’s newest adventure really steps into the sci-fi realm — unlike its competitor Battlefield 1, which has a World War I setting.

Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg responded to this news by saying how much he appreciates the fans and how candid they are. In a continuing statement, Hirshberg proposed the idea of why so many people hate the Infinite Warfare. He said there are the older fans that want the boots-on-the-ground combat, and then there are the newer fans that want a new adventure.

“Of course we know that there are people in our community who are nostalgic for the boots-on-the-ground-style gameplay, and that’s why we made Modern Warfare Remastered. But we also have millions of people in our community who want to have new innovative experiences in the game each year and Infinite Warfare is going to deliver that. And the good news is this year we found a way to deliver both in one package while keeping our community together.”

Many fans complained about Black Ops 2, which takes place in the future, and that game went on to be one of the most successful in the CoD series. (And it’s possible that all the dislikes won’t actually hurt sales at all.) There have been multiple futuristic games that give fans a warm up to Infinite Warfare, such as Ghosts, Advanced Warfare, and Black Ops III.

Modern Warfare Remastered is available as a bundled game for $20, but you can only get it if you buy Infinite Warfare. (That’s marketing for you.)

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is set for release on PC, Xbox One and PS4 November 4.
