Interest in console gaming has increased among teens

There are more teens interested in owning a Xbox One or PS4 than ever before.

Some of the fear about the future of console gaming can be put to rest. A new study on teen consumption habits released by Piper Jaffray, an investment bank, shows that overall interest in console gaming has consistently increased over the past year. The study states that:

73% of respondents anticipate buying a next-gen console or already own one, compared to 70% in the spring and 67% in Fall 2014.

This is an almost 20% increase in interest in the PS4 and Xbox One since their release in late 2013.

The biggest source of worry over console gaming’s future was probably caused by the rising populary of mobile games. But this same study shows that even though popularity and ownership of iPhones has increased, the number of teens playing games on either their tablet or smart hone is at the lowest it’s been in over two and half years – at 79%. This could be worrisome for mobile game industry, if it were not for the 24% of teens buying virtual goods in their games, the highest those numbers ever been.

This study was conducted by surveying 9,400 teens, from various income brackets.
