Bain was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2014 and was forward with his fanbase throughout most of the ordeal. Notably the cancer entered remission in 2015, but resurfaced at a later date.

His online persona, TotalBiscuit, stands as one of the best-known voices in game criticism despite the trials he had gone through with cancer. His passion for the games industry and the consumers that drive it continued despite his battle with cancer.

Less than a month ago, he announced he would be retiring from games criticism due to his declining health.

“I’m coming to terms with the fact that I don’t have long left and right now, at any rate, there is literally nothing I can do about it other than try to manage the pain as best as possible and stay hydrated as possible to ease the pressure on the liver,” he stated in a Reddit post detailing he would be moving forward with the treatments and the future of the Co-Optional podcast.

Though he was very public about his struggles with cancer, his passing is a hard pill to swallow. One of gaming’s strongest voices has been silenced.

John Bain leaves behind the legacy of a man passionate about his hobby and his family. He will sorely be missed.
