Journey Soundtrack Nominated for a Grammy

The beee-yoo-ti-ful soundtrack for the PSN title Journey is up for a Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack. A win would mark the second time video game music has won a trophy, and the first win for an entire video game score.

Movers, shakers, and taste makers of the music biz converged on Wednesday to announce the nominees for the 55th annual Grammy Awards.

Of course, we had the usual suspects: Taylor Swift, who co-hosted last night’s bash, Kanye “Imma Let You Finish” West, and Jay-Z lead the Grammy pack in the number of nominations, each with six.

One slight surprise: Journey’s stunning soundtrack is up for the award for Best Score Soundtrack, pitting composer Austin Wintory against the likes of Hans Zimmer (The Dark Knight Rises), Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), and John Williams (The Adventures Of Tintin – The Secret Of The Unicorn).

Stiff competition there. All of the nominees are legendary. John Williams also worked on the scores of the Star Wars flicks and composed the theme we all know and love.

Journey blasted past all other PlayStation Network games when it was released in March, and broke records, becoming the fastest-selling title on the PSN market. The soundtrack was released via the PS Store and iTunes in April, and went on to top the iTunes charts in over 20 countries. Gracious as he is for his amazing success, Wintory took to You Tube uploads of the songs on the album to thank uploaders for spreading his music.

The opening song for Civilization IV, Christopher Tin’sBaba Yetu“, won a Grammy last year, marking the first time a song from a video game took home a trophy. A win for Wintory would mark a first for an entire video game score.

Check out some of the soundtrack for yourself. It is seriously too beautiful not to listen to. If you don’t get chills, you’re dead inside. For real.

Congratulations to Austin Wintory and thatgamecompany on the nomination!
