Sony has announced that “KAZ: Pushing the Virtual Divide,” will launch on January 22, and it will feature interesting historical footage along with “never before told stories” from automotive and gaming experts.

The movie will trace GT creator Kazunori Yamauchi’s career, which includes a stint as a pro driver and of course, his founding of the Polyphony Digital studio. The film celebrates 15 years of GT greatness; does anyone remember the first installment on the original PlayStation…? I sure do. As for this film, it’s directed by Tamir Moscovici and captured by noted cinematographer Anthony Arendt (“Avatar”). If you’re a big-time racing fanatic, or you’re just a fan of the series in question, you’ll want to check it out.

Also, on the day of the film’s release, there will be a roundtable session on Twitch featuring both Yamauchi and Moscovici. They’ll hand out $1 million worth of in-game credits for the recently released Gran Turismo 6, so that’s a good incentive to tune in, right?

Woah, a film based on a game that’s actually worthwhile

Okay, so it’s a documentary and that’s different. I get that. Still, given the sheer number of miserable failures we’ve seen in the box office – regarding movies that are based on video games – I’d say this is a win-win. This should be a well-done, professional documentary that puts gaming in a positive light, and those who appreciate the subject matter will almost certainly enjoy themselves.
