League of Legends Season 4 World Championship Held in South Korea

eSports powerhouse, South Korea, is preparing to host the Season 4 League of Legends World Championship Finals for 2014, and it's about time they got to show us what they've got!

Riot Games recently announced that the Season 4 World Championship will be held in South Korea.

This will be the first League of Legends Championship event to take place in South Korea, after the first took place in Sweden, and the second and third in Los Angeles, California. This will bring the World Championships to what has often been hailed as the mecca of eSports, since the explosion of professional Starcraft play throughout South Korea.

South Korea has been a powerhouse in eSports and professional gaming in general for long enough that Korean players have a powerful reputation on the competitive scene. While still maintaining a powerful showing in Starcraft II, Korean teams have held very strong placement in almost all competitive eSports, to include League of Legends. South Korean team SK Telecom T1 took the League Season 3 World Championship clean, and the country’s competitive scene is showing no signs of slowing down.

Despite South Korea’s massive effect on eSports, no League of Legends Championship has been held there, and it was about time that they were chosen to host the event.

Riot’s grand showing of the World Championship Finals at the Staples Center in Los Angeles was impressive to say the least, and held in a country that is still on the cusp of eSports being a major, legitimate endeavor accepted by the mainstream, is even more impressive.

What kind of an incredible show is South Korea going to pull for us, a country that has widely accepted competitive gaming for many years? I have to admit, the anticipation is intense; Riot raised the bar for gaming as a whole, selling out a major sporting arena for the Season 3 Championships and really validating the efforts of gamers everywhere in making their passion into something powerful and really worthwhile.

Riot has set that standard, and South Korea is ready to uphold it proudly at the end of this next season.

Season 4 is entering its preseason patching phase for the next few months. I’m excited to see what teams are going to appear as strong contenders this year, and with any luck we’ll see some great play surrounding the new changes being introduced.
