DirectX12 has been announced. More details to come at Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

Six years have passed since an announcement of a new version of DirectX, as well as a release. Microsoft has announced that there will be a DirectX 12. Little is known about DirectX 12, but they plan to do the unveiling at the Game Developers Conference (GDC). The unveiling will be at 10 am on March 20th.

According to information released by IGN, Anuj Gosalia will be heading the presentation. Highlights on the panel are to include:

  • better tools for developers
  • added performance
  • support for various hardware and platforms (said to include pc, mobile, and console)

With the Xbox One just releasing a few months ago, commenters on the article are questioning whether the One will see this as an update, or if the One is compatible with Microsoft’s new graphic API. If Microsoft greatly improves DirectX 12, computer gamers will be happy with the update. Only time will tell. IGN will be live-streaming the panel from GDC.
